Acknowledgement of Country

Sandpit respectfully works across the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nations, as well as the Kaurna and Yugambeh peoples. We recognise and respect their continued cultural, spiritual and technological practices.

We also extend this to all First Nations peoples across the land known as Australia and pay respects to their Ancestors and Elders past and present.

As the very first storytellers and technologists, First Nations peoples possess invaluable knowledge and perspectives that are crucial to the work that we do across both the physical and digital realms.

ANZ Gothic

ANZ Gothic

A museum that honours its architectural history through seamless digital intervention.

Sandpit worked with ANZ to bring their ‘Gothic Bank’ to life, celebrating a Melbourne landmark and blending heritage design with contemporary interactivity. The Verdon Chambers on the corner of Queen and Collins Street is over 140 years old, and has recently been lovingly restored to its former glory. Sandpit worked to fill the space with life, content and interactivity to engage and inform audiences in a way that complements the space’s iconic architectural identity.

The project includes four main components, each meticulously designed to honour the building’s legacy. A permanent exhibition, featuring four touch interactives, offers visitors an immersive journey through the history of banking. In addition, there is a temporary exhibition with three interactive touch displays on a three to six monthly curatorial rotation.

Embracing the challenge of preserving heritage, we also crafted a ‘Welcome Wall’ that echoes the Gothic tessellation of the ceiling and greets visitors with a sensor-activated welcome message, giving them the unique opportunity to explore a detailed 3D model of the building’s features.

Our design also incorporated QR codes associated with each of the display items to offer visitors the option to dive deep without overwhelming them with printed text. We built a custom CMS to ensure smooth operation and give ANZ the ability to maintain and update all digital components moving forward. A digital clock commemorates ANZ’s foundation, marking the date to the second from when it was first opened.
