Sandpit respectfully works across the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nations, as well as the Kaurna and Yugambeh peoples. We recognise and respect their continued cultural, spiritual and technological practices.

We also extend this to all First Nations peoples across the land known as Australia and pay respects to their Ancestors and Elders past and present.

As the very first storytellers and technologists, First Nations peoples possess invaluable knowledge and perspectives that are crucial to the work that we do across both the physical and digital realms.

Naracoorte Caves

Sandpit brings megafauna animals back to life, projected inside a World Heritage cave site.

Sandpit was engaged by the Department of Environment & Water to create a new visitor experience for the Naracoorte Caves in South Australia, the state’s only World Heritage site. The Naracoorte Caves are home to one of the most significant fossil remains of Australian megafauna, many of which became extinct over 60,000 years ago.

As part of a larger masterplan review of the site, Sandpit was engaged to strategically review and concept design new ways that technology could be used to bring to life the most significant collection of megafauna fossil remains within the Victoria Fossil Cave.

This led to the creation of a new audiovisual experience that vividly depicts what the Megafauna and their habitats might have looked like, and how their remains came to be in the caves. Working with illustrator and animator Chris Edser, five megafauna animals are brought back to life and projection mapped into the contours of the Victoria Fossil Cave. Working in such a remote and organic environment posed many unique challenges and we were excited to find clever, creative solutions to overcome them.
